Description

1836 Specimen 64 Red and Brown, Struck From Proof Dies. N-1, R.1. EAC graded MS 63. According to Breen, 8 proofs are known of this date, and while there are examples from other dies, the majority are from the N-1 die pairing. This piece lacks the unequivocal clarity of a proof in the fields, but there is enough reflectivity to convince even the most skeptical that this coin was struck shortly after the few proofs were produced. The edge is sharp and squared off, showing no beveling. Sharply struck, except on the peripheral stars, but probably not doubly struck.
The coin has almost even amounts of mint red and brown with more red present on the reverse. There is a light edge dent over star 5, a moderate sized spot to the lower right of star 6, and a few microscopic specks of carbon on the obverse.
