Description

1837 1C Head of 1838, N-9, R.1, MS65 Brown PCGS. Ex: Naftzger Collection. A remarkable late die state example with multiple obverse and reverse die cracks. This highly lustrous Gem displays pristine chocolate-brown surfaces with traces of original red mint color in the protected areas. Slight roughness outside stars 2, 3, and 4 were described as die scratches in the Goldberg catalog, but those areas appear to be trivial lamination defects as struck. Del Bland grades this piece MS63 and fifth finest known, while Bill Noyes grades it MS62 and tied for ninth finest known. We agree with the late Del Bland. Our EAC grade MS63.
Ex: Richard Picker; C. Douglas Smith (1972); Del Bland; Jerry A. Bobbe; R. E. Naftzger, Jr.; C. Douglas Smith; Herman Halpern (Stack's, 3/1988), lot 496; R. E. Naftzger, Jr. (Goldberg Coins, 2/2009), lot 383; The Northwest Collection (Goldberg Coins, 5/2012), lot 47.
