Description

1837 Cent, MS64 Red and Brown
Plain Cords, Small Letters, N-5

1837 1C Plain Cords, Small Letters, N-5, R.2, MS64 Red and Brown PCGS. CAC. Ex: Doug Bird Collection. Newcomb-5 is a transitional variety that combines the Plain Cords obverse (as seen on 1836 cents) with the Small Letters reverse (as seen on 1838 cents). All other 1837 die marriages have either a Beaded Cords bust or a Large Letters reverse. The PCGS insert states a Doug Bird pedigree, but the present coin did not appear in the February 2020 Goldberg auction of the Douglas F. Bird Collection. The essentially unabraded surfaces display ample orange-gold color, especially on the reverse. A spot is noted between the ED in UNITED. Population: 4 in 64 Red and Brown, 0 finer (1/23).
