Description

The Discovery Coin 1838 N-15 Cent; Still the Finest Known

1838 1C MS62 Brown NGC. AU55 EAC. N-15, Usual Die State, R.5. One of two different varieties not known to Howard Newcomb, and both were struck from the same reverse die! The obverse is the same die that was later used for N-12; the reverse was also used for N-11 (earlier) and N-16 (later). This is the discovery coin for the variety, first recognized by Walter Breen in 1959. Although quite a number have been located since that time, some hiding in collections as either N-11 or N-12, this example is still the finest known 1838 N-15 cent. By the time his book on the middle date cents was published, John Wright reported that 31 examples were known, and he alone had found six of them. All N-15s are approximately the same die state, with a crisp, fully defined obverse die, and a well worn reverse die. Pleasing olive-brown surfaces have some subtle steel toning, as well as hints of light tan luster, faded from original red. The surfaces are above average for an 1838 cent.
