Description
Mint State 1838 N-4 Cent
1838 1C MS65 Brown NGC. MS63 EAC. N-4, Intermediate Die State, R.1. The die state aficionado will be quite pleased that this is such a common variety as it presents an opportunity to assemble quite a display of different examples. This is an intermediate die state with the obverse cracked through several dentils below the date. An extension of this crack travels through the 8 and 3 of the date with several small branches, eventually forming a double crack through the lower curls to the base of Liberty's neck. The area between these two cracks has formed a heavy internal break. A splendid cent that nearly reaches the Red and Brown plateau, with full luster and light brown toning.Ex: 1980 ANA Sale (Steve Ivy Numismatic Auctions, 8/80), lot 1090; Del Bland (10/80); Doug Bird (4/85).(#1741) (Registry values: N1793)
