Description

1839 Booby Head MS 64 Brown NGC. The Philadelphia Mint's continued modification of the large cent in the late 1830s and early 1840s resulted in a string of sub-varieties within the Coronet series. Liberty's exposed shoulder is the diagnostic feature of this scarcer design. While the surfaces are essentially chocolate-brown in color, we report that orange-red luster is still visible within some of the letters of LIBERTY and about the lower left wreath. The reverse displays a crisp overall impression, although the obverse periphery is conspicuous by its lack of definition. Free of distracting contact marks, the reverse denticles between OF and AMERICA betray a small carbon spot that does not, however, detract from this example's overall pleasing appearance.
From the Litrenta Collection.
