Description

Middle Die State 1839/6 N-1 Cent

1839/6 1C VF35 NGC. VF20 EAC. N-1, Intermediate Die State, R.3. The middle die state of this popular overdate has a crack from the left obverse border between stars 3 and 4, to Liberty's nose and eye, but not extending any further. Among 1839/6 overdate cents, those with perfect dies are the most common, while the intermediate and late die states are considerably scarcer. John Wright noted that porous black examples of this variety are much more common than smooth brown ones. Olive-brown surfaces are accented by hints of gold. Despite a few light abrasions, this is a splendid example of the variety.
