Description
Important 1840 N-3 Cent
1840 1C Small Date MS64 Brown NGC. MS60 EAC. N-3, Die State C, R.1. This is a late die state with the hub defects gone and the obverse cracks heavy, even later than Brown: 13, the latest die state in the Robinson Brown Collection. This example is also clearly finer than the Brown example. Frosty surfaces have full luster with lovely medium brown color and wisps of pale blue toning. A couple darker toning spots are visible on each side, and the reverse has traces of original mint red. The obverse has a few tiny lamination chips, in the hair above R and in the right field near star 10. Tied for seventh finest of the variety, per Bob Grellman in the Frankenfield catalog.Ex: Roy Rauch (McIntire Numismatic Auctions, Inc., 6/88), lot 50; J.R. Frankenfield (Superior, 2/01), lot 1215, $920.(#1823)(Registry values: P1)
