Description
Census Level 1840 N-4 Cent
1840 1C Small Date MS65 Brown NGC. MS62 EAC. N-4, Die State B, Low R.3. Prominent hub defects are visible below the date, and these features led previous students to consider this an 1840 over 39 overdate. It is not an overdate. The hub defects are stronger on the early and middle die states of this variety than they are on any other 1840 die marriage. Several small rim breaks are visible from below the date to star 3. The surfaces have frosty medium brown color with hints of pale blue toning and traces of faded reddish-orange mint luster. There is a small nick on Liberty's throat and a couple small rim nicks at star 9, limiting the grade.Ex: Thomas Reynolds; Thomas Turissini; McCawley & Grellman (8/96), lot 418; Robinson S. Brown, Jr. (Superior, 6/02), lot 15, $2,875.(#1823)(Registry values: P1)
