1840 1C Small Date over Large 18 MS65 Red and Brown PCGS. N-2,
R.2. MRB MS63. Ex: Rasmussen-Boka. Grellman state b; this piece
has a boldly repunched date with light flowlines and a prominent
rim break below the date.This lustrous and frosty steel-brown specimen retains nearly half its mint red. A few trivial marks appear on the cheek and near the dentils below star 4, with otherwise pristine surfaces. This piece is tied for sixth finest in the Grellman census. Previously certified MS64 Red and Brown PCGS. The cataloger acknowledges and appreciates the assistance of Bob Grellman who provided census notes for all the late date cents in the Boka Collection. Plated on page 138 of Al Boka's Provenance Gallery of the Year 1794.
John Robert Grellman, Jr., known as Bob in Early American Coppers circles, is a retired U.S. Air Force officer who now devotes his attention to early copper, specializing in late date large cents. He and Chris Victor-McCawley are partners in M & G Auctions, exclusively handling early copper coinage and conducting the annual Early American Coppers sales. Grellman is the author of The Die Varieties of United States Large Cents, 1840-1857.
