    1841 N-2 Large Cent, MS65 Brown
    Early Die State, Ex: Helfenstein

    1841 1C MS65 Brown PCGS. N-2, R.2. MRB MS63+. Ex: Brown-Boka. This early die state piece has clear hub defects at the date that suggest a possible recut date. Frosty light steel surfaces with reflective fields and considerable underlying mint red. Pristine surfaces are virtually without marks. This piece holds the number two position in the Grellman census.
    Louis Helfenstein was born in 1906 and died in 1978. He was an attorney for the Consolidated Mutual Insurance Company in New York. Helfenstein was acquainted with C. Douglas Smith, who started him down the early copper path. The Helfenstein Collection, including 332 exceptional cents, was sold by Lester Merkin in August 1964.
