1842 1C Small Date MS64 Red PCGS. N-2, R.1. Our EAC Grade MS66. Ex: Naftzger Collection. Grellman Die State d. As of (11/13), PCGS has certified 252 business strike 1842 cents, but only the present lot is certified by that service as Red. Both sides are apricot-gold with occasional hints of mellowing to gray and several tiny tan flecks on the left obverse. Lustrous and well preserved with a bold strike aside from the uppermost stars. Noyes grades it MS65 and lists it as CC#2. Grellman has it as MS65+, close to MS66, and CC#2.
