The Finest Known 1842 N-1 Cent

1842 1C Small Date MS65 Red and Brown NGC. MS63 EAC. N-1, Die State B, R.3. This is the finest known business strike example of this die variety. Several proofs are also known from these dies. The late die state of this variety has a weak die lump under the digit 1. In early die states, heavier lumps were visible beneath the 1 and the 4. These were caused by shallow depressions in the actual coinage die, and the diminished appearance in later die states was due to die lapping or polishing. Sharply struck except a few of the stars are flat. The surfaces have lovely medium brown color with considerable original orange mint luster. A couple darker toning spots and swirls are visible, especially on the obverse.
