N-4, Large Letters Reverse

1843 1C Petite Head, Large Letters, N-4, 13, R.1, MS65 Brown PCGS. CAC. Grellman Die State a. A transitional variety that combines the soon-to-be-replaced Petite Head with the new Large Letters reverse. The sole die marriage of the subtype combination. Newcomb mistakenly assigned different variety numbers to the early and lapped die states, respectively N-4 and N-13. This early dies N-4 Gem displays rich walnut-brown and gunmetal toning. The lustrous surfaces are smooth aside from a small strike-through near star 1 and a faint graze from the U in UNITED. Our EAC grade MS60.(Registry values: P1)
