Description

1847 N-29 Cent, MS65 Red
Finest Known, Ex: Naftzger

1847 1C MS65 Red NGC. N-29, R.3. Our EAC Grade MS65. Ex: Naftzger. Grellman Die State d with two lengthy reverse cracks. Somehow, this high grade type coin has retained almost all of its initial fiery red. Minute obverse carbon is noted, and the obverse color has slightly mellowed, but the eye appeal is formidable. The strike is good though star 1 is soft, as are the LI in LIBERTY and the leaf above the E in ONE. Both Grellman and Noyes place the present piece atop the Condition Census. Noyes calls it MS67 and best by four points, his photo #31061. Grellman lists it as MS65. As of (11/13), one of just four 1847 cents certified as full Red by NGC regardless of die variety, 2 in MS64 and 2 in MS65.
Ex: Sale #59 (New Netherlands, 6/1967), lot 1334; R.E. Naftzger, Jr. (Ira & Larry Goldberg, 9/2009), lot 799.
