Description

1847 Large Over Small 47, MS65 Brown
N-18, Condition Census #1
Ex: Starr, Naftzger

1847/47 1C Large Over Small 47 MS65 Brown PCGS. N-18, R.5. Our EAC Grade MS63. Ex: Naftzger. Grellman Die State a. The well known blundered date variety with repunching obvious above the 8 and 7. Bold die lines near the IC in AMERICA confirm the rare Newcomb variety. The reverse has more Red than Brown though the obverse is deep brown aside from peripheral glimmers of mint red. Well struck, and unabraded aside from inconsequential contact on Liberty's jaw and neck. Grellman grades it MS64 and lists it as CC#1. Noyes calls it MS63 and ranks it tied for CC#1 (photo #31156).
Ex: Henry Chapman; Henry C. Hines; Floyd T. Starr (Stack's, 6/1984), lot 522; R.E. Naftzger, Jr. (Ira & Larry Goldberg, 9/2009), lot 777.
