Description

1849 N-1 Cent, MS66 Brown
Middle Die State
Possibly the Finest Known

1849 1C N-1, N-15, R.4, MS66 Brown PCGS. Grellman Die State b, with myriad points and lines visible on the obverse die, and a heavy bar bisecting the O in OF. Thin rim breaks are evident over stars 7, 8, and 9. This piece is clearly finer than any of the three in the Dan Holmes collection, including the piece that was called third finest for the variety. It is equal to, or possibly slightly finer than, the best Naftzger coin that was called finest known. The rich chocolate-brown surfaces exhibit full cartwheel luster with hints of original mint red. Both sides are virtually flawless and show only microscopic spots. An extraordinary 1849 cent. Our EAC grade MS63.
