Description

Fascinating 1851 Inverted Date Cent, MS65 Brown NGC

1851/81 1C MS65 Brown NGC. N-3, R.1. A shimmering chestnut-brown Gem with virtually immaculate fields. The field inside the wreath has a couple of minor planchet flaws, as produced, and a faint abrasion below the jaw is only visible under a lens. The major devices are sharply struck, and only the upper obverse stars lack bold centrils. A popular Guide Book variety, the engraver accidentally inverted the date logotype before correcting his error, a blunder later reproduced on the 1865-S Eagle. Population: 8 in 65, 4 finer (3/04).
From the Robert Bowling Collection. (#1895)
