Description

Mint-Fresh 1855 Coronet Cent, Upright 5s

1855 1C MS 66 Red PCGS. Upright 5s. Numismatic scholars have determined that Engraver James B. Longacre preferred to use slanting 5s when preparing his dies. With upright 5s, the obverse die that coined this example was most likely the work of an assistant at the Philadelphia Mint. The swirling fire-red luster defies the fact that this coin left the Mint more than 140 years ago. There are no distracting abrasions or toning spots on the pristine surfaces. Pinpoint definition on the obverse portrait rounds out the uncommonly attractive eye appeal of this late-date large cent.
