1793 S-2 Cent, XF Details
Abrasion-Free AMERICA Variety

1793 1C Chain, AMERICA, S-2, B-2, High R.4 -- Environmental Damage -- PCGS Genuine. XF Details. Chocolate-brown and steel-blue coloration blankets moderately porous obverse surfaces that lead to some central weakness. All details on the reverse are bold. A couple of microscopic pinpricks right of the second S in STATES are mentioned for completeness, and have long since blended into the toning. There are five die marriages of the Chain Cent type, one of which, the NC-1, is known by two examples. After that, the present S-2 is the scarcest, at High R.4. It pairs the only AMERICA reverse with the obverse of the AMERI. variety, identified by the widest date of the year, as well as the wide ER and close BE in LIBERTY. Despite its porosity, the present example's high sharpness grade, attractive color, and lack of abrasions make it an ideal candidate for the collector seeking a single example of America's first cent for their collection. Among the 100 Greatest U.S. Coins (#21 in 6th edition).
