Description

1837 N-4 Cent, MS66 Red and Brown
High Condition Census

1837 1C Medium Letters, N-4, R.2, MS66 Red and Brown PCGS. CAC. Perhaps a dozen Mint State examples survive from this plentiful die marriage. This example matches the plate of the Andrew M. Hain Collection that Stack's sold in 2002. Two decades earlier, the coin appeared in our (Steve Ivy Rare Coins) 1980 ANA auction. It is tied for fourth finest in the Noyes condition census based on his examination of the black and white illustration in the Hain catalog, but likely should hold a higher census ranking. The obverse features substantial red mint luster with lovely emerald toning on the high points. The reverse blends emerald and steel-blue with bright red luster. PCGS Population for all Plain Hair Cord varieties: 6 in 66 Red and Brown, 0 finer (4/26).
Ex: Cincinnati ANA (Steve Ivy Rare Coins, 8/1980), lot 995; Stack's (3/1986), lot 852; Andrew M. Hain (Stack's, 1/2002), lot 808 but plated at lot 809.
