The Superior Galleries New York ANA Sale of August 2002 contains an especially rich offering of early American copper coinage. The sale opens with colonials, showcasing iconic Massachusetts silver and copper issues-Oak Tree, Pine Tree, and related pieces-alongside St. Patrick coppers, Wood's Hibernia halfpennies, Virginia halfpennies, and Voce Populi tokens. These are followed by a deep run of state coinages such as Connecticut, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Jersey, and New York coppers, capped with rarities like Chalmers shillings and the rare Nova Constellatio and Immunis Columbia types. The Massachusetts half cents and cents of 1787-1788 stand out as the first U.S. coins to use the denomination "Cent," reflecting the transition from colonial to federal coinage. Across the offerings, superior eye appeal, provenance, and rarity define the coppers, often with notable pedigrees to landmark collections.
Large cents are also a major strength of the sale, beginning with early dates and flowing through middle and late dates in extensive depth. Examples include 1793 Liberty Caps, 1794-1796 rarities, and exceptional condition census pieces through the 1830s-1850s, highlighting the auction's role in dispersing cornerstone holdings of half cents and large cents, with many varieties described in full detail by Bob Grellman. Exceptional condition, variety attribution, and historic provenance make this sale especially significant to early copper specialists. Together, the colonial coppers, state coinages, and federal half cents and large cents represent one of the most comprehensive offerings of early American copper ever assembled in a single ANA auction.
