Description
1817 N-16 Cent, AU58
Popular Blundered Die Variety
1817 1C 15 Stars, N-16, R.1, AU58 PCGS. Ex: Twin Leaf
Collection. The term "Blundered Die" is a fancy way of stating that
the Mint's engraver made a mistake. In this case, 15 stars were
punched into the obverse die instead of the standard 13-star
layout. Many students of the early cents have questioned the reason
for 15 obverse stars. The census ranking of this example is debatable as it is for many early cent varieties. The Twin Leaf cataloger relied on PCGS grades to place this piece above another Twin Leaf coin graded AU55 PCGS and above the AU58 NGC Adam Mervis coin that we sold a dozen years ago. Alternatively, Bill Noyes placed this example lower in the census than either of those other coins.
The present early die state example was struck from misaligned obverse and reverse dies. Both sides display splashes of tan on the rich, lustrous blue-steel surfaces. Traces of wear appear on the high points of the design as expected for a lightly circulated example. The surfaces show scattered marks of little consequence. This is an excellent example for a variety specialist, a Guide Book variety collector, or general early copper enthusiast.
