Description
1794 S-59 Head of 1794 Cent, AU53
Tied for the Sixth Finest of the Variety
1794 1C Head of 1794, S-59, B-57, R.3, AU53 PCGS. This
important Sheldon-59 cent is tied for the sixth finest example of
the variety as recorded at 1794largecents.com. The Stack's
cataloger, in 1956, wrote: "A very sharp nicely balanced coin in
dark brown, from the Newcomb Collection. A very Scarce coin. About
Uncirculated." This important cent was offered under the
"Consignment Jolip" heading in that 1956 catalog with no further
identity of the consignor.Seven decades ago, when this example appeared for sale, it was thought to be tied for the second finest known trailing only a Mint State coin that was once in the Lorin Parmelee Collection. While offered privately on occasion, the present auction appearance is the first since its 1956 sale. This lovely cent has splashes of maroon patina on medium chocolate-brown surfaces with original planchet marks visible at the upper obverse due to a somewhat uneven strike.
Ex: Howard R. Newcomb (privately before 1945); "Consignment Jolip" (Stack's, 10/1956), lot 5; later; Lester Merkin; C. Douglas Smith; Gordon J. Wrubel (12/1975); Denis W. Loring (7/1981); John G. Wood; Bowers and Ruddy Galleries (offered in Rare Coin Review issues 41, 44, and 45, November 1981, June 1982, and August 1982); later, Kevin Vinton (9/2019).
