Undated Large Cent, VG Details
Mirrored Brockage on the Obverse
1817 N-4 or N-14
Undated (1817) 1C -- Mirrored Brockage On Obverse, Scratches --
NGC Details. VG. This early U.S. Mint error occurred when a
cent stuck to the obverse die. Another cent was fed between the
dies, and was struck between the reverse die and the reverse of the
previously struck cent. Although the coin does not have a date,
arduous elimination of possibilities confirms it was struck by the
reverse die of 1817 N-4, N-5, and N-14. Key to the attribution is
the recut left base of the N in ONE. N-5 has mushy lower reverse
dentils and the present coin does not. The coin is thus either N-4
or N-14, with the latter more likely. This medium brown cent has a
few thin test marks on the central reverse, made by a curious
finder. The reverse also has a couple of minor rim nicks.
Nonetheless, an impressive mint error for the early copper
specialist to ponder. Our EAC grade Good 4.From The Jamestown Collection, Part II.
