Description

1850 Liberty Head Double Eagle, AU55
Ex: S.S. Republic

1850 $20 AU55 NGC. Ex: S.S. Republic. Both the Philadelphia Mint and the New Orleans Mint struck double eagles in the first year of regular production for the twenty dollar denomination. More than 1.1 million pieces were struck in Philadelphia, while the O-mint output was about 88% less at 141,100 pieces. Most survivors from either mint are well circulated. Adding to the P-mint survivors are a few dozen shipwreck recoveries. This Choice About Uncirculated example was an S.S. Republic find. It remains in its original special label NGC holder, There is little visible shipwreck effect and the orange-gold surfaces are lightly abraded showing a few light marks. Bold eye appeal exists for the assigned grade.(Registry values: N1793)
