Description

1850 Liberty Double Eagle, MS61 CAC
First Year of Denomination

1850 $20 MS61 NGC. CAC. The Philadelphia Mint struck double eagles for the first time in 1850, when a large mintage of more than 1.1 million pieces was accomplished. The coins were released into circulation and most were used to settle large accounts in foreign or domestic trade. Despite the novelty value of the new issue, few examples were saved by contemporary collectors, as 20 dollars was too much money for the average person to set aside at the time. As a result, the 1850 Liberty double eagle is an elusive issue in all Mint State grades today.

This impressive MS61 specimen exhibits sharply detailed design elements and the lustrous yellow-gold surfaces are lightly marked for the grade. Overall eye appeal is strong and the high quality within the grade is confirmed by CAC. Census: 33 in 61 (2 in 61+), 38 finer. CAC: 8 in 61, 10 finer (11/25).(Registry values: N4719)
