    1850 Twenty Dollar, MS62+
Rare in High Grade, Ideal for Type

1850 $20 MS62+ NGC. Gold Rush-era Philadelphia double eagle issues are scarce to rare in Mint State despite mintages that stretched into the millions in order to coin vast quantities of California gold. Moreover, coins that survive in Uncirculated condition typically grade no better than MS62 due to bagmarks or other surface impairments. In fact, with the exceptions of the 1861 and a couple of dates salvaged from shipwrecks, all No Motto Liberty Head twenties are rare in MS63 and finer grades.

This MS62 example of the first-year issue stands apart from most of its peers with a Plus designation -- one of only two awarded to an 1850 double eagle in this grade at NGC. The devices are sharp and satiny, yielding bright yellow-gold luster and no bothersome abrasions. Eye appeal is pleasing. Census: 26 in 62 (2 in 62+), 14 finer (11/18).(Registry values: N7079)

    Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 268F, PCGS# 8902)

    Weight: 33.44 grams
