Bold AU53 1850-O Double Eagle

1850-O $20 AU53 NGC. A perennially popular issue, the only branch mint emission from the first (collectible) year of this largest and most impressive classic U.S. gold denomination. The popularity is equal parts scarcity and availability; it is the scarcest among the 1850-O through 1852-O issues, yet enough exist in AU grades that persistent collectors can obtain a nice example. In Mint State the equation changes, where the 1852-O is incredibly rare and the subject of feverish demand on the infrequent occasions when a true Uncirculated piece become available in the marketplace.
This piece shows a bold and pleasing strike over choice surfaces that still display considerable remaining luster. The abrasions can be characterized more as light field chatter than any significant marks. The O mintmark is stronger on the right than on the left, apparently from an uneven impression into the die. Census: 53 in 53, 68 finer (8/09).
