    1851-O Double Eagle, AU55
    Bright Yellow-Gold Color

1851-O $20 AU55 PCGS. Given the importance of steamship travel during the 1850s coupled with New Orleans' eminence as the "Queen of the Mississippi Delta" during this crucial era of economic development and industrialization, it comes as no great surprise that the O-mint gold coins of this decade usually show signs of circulation far and wide. This is certainly the case with the typical 1851-O double eagle, the second year of the new series from New Orleans. The average certified coin -- the top end of all survivors, beyond doubt -- is a bit better than Choice XF. This Choice AU example shows plenty of mint luster remaining, and light field chatter rather than major marks account for the grade. The surfaces display a decent strike and attractive yellow-gold color. Population: 33 in 55, 20 finer (9/13).(Registry values: N1793) (NGC ID# 268J, PCGS# 8905)
