Description
1851-O Double Eagle, AU58
Ideal New Orleans Type Coin
1851-O $20 AU58 NGC. Variety 1. The 1851-O Liberty double
eagle was produced in large numbers and is one of the more
available issues in the New Orleans Mint series. The issue is in
great demand from mintmark type collectors. While lower circulated
examples can be located with little effort, AU specimens are scarce
and Mint State examples are rare. Several examples were found in
recent shipwreck recoveries, but none were in Mint State
condition. This attractive near-Mint piece displays bright yellow and greenish-gold surfaces that are lightly abraded for the grade. The well-detailed design elements show only a trace of wear on the high points of the design and the surfaces retain significant amounts of original mint luster. Census: 59 in 58 (1 in 58+), 18 finer (6/13).(Registry values: N1793)
Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 268J, PCGS# 8905, Greysheet# 9844)
Weight: 33.44 grams
Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
