    1851-O Liberty Double Eagle, AU58
Early O-Mint Issue, Rare Any Finer

1851-O $20 AU58 NGC. Variety 1. Ex: Eagle Collection. The 1851-O is the most obtainable New Orleans double eagle in terms of overall rarity, and it is slightly more available than the 1852-O in higher grades. This is a popular issue with type collectors, because the issue is typically seen with a better strike and nicer coloration than other O-mint double eagles. Calling the 1851-O a "common date" is, of course, a relative term; an estimated 175-225 pieces are known in the various About Uncirculated grades, the great majority in the lower range. The 1851-O is quite scarce as a properly graded AU55, rare in AU58, and very rare in any Uncirculated grade.

The present example is bright green-gold, sharply defined in the centers with the usual softness around the margins, which display some attractive orange accents. Traces of prooflike surface survive within the reverse legends. A few light handling marks are evident, the most obvious ones in front and back of Liberty's head. Census: 76 in 58 (2 in 58+), 18 finer (2/19).
