Description

1851-O Double Eagle, AU58
Well-Struck with Outstanding Eye Appeal

1851-O $20 AU58 NGC. Variety 3. Although a relatively high number of examples survive from this second-year New Orleans double eagle issue, with nearly 1,200 pieces certified by NGC and PCGS combined, the great majority of those coins exist in lower circulated grades. The issue is scarce in AU condition and rare in Mint State.

This near-Mint specimen exhibits impressive, nearly full strike definition, with softness noted only on a couple of the design's highest points. Pleasing green-gold coloration is noted, along with substantial mint luster. High point friction is minimal, and surface marks are relatively modest on both sides of the coin, for the grade. Census: 61 in 58 (1 in 58+), 19 finer (6/14).
