Description

1851-O Liberty Twenty, AU58
Elusive Issue in High Grades

1851-O $20 AU58 PCGS. CAC. Variety 2. Ex: "Col." E.H.R. Green / Eric P. Newman Collection. While the banking sector was experiencing increasing demand for coins, this period also saw some of the largest gold exports from the California gold fields during the Gold Rush. Despite its high mintage (315,000 pieces), the 1851-O Liberty double eagle experienced a high attrition rate. High-end AU examples are scarce, and the date is a notable rarity across the Mint State threshold. This near-Mint example boasts rich lemon-gold patina and retains substantial original, semiprooflike mirroring in the fields. A highly attractive early New Orleans twenty, close to full Mint State -- appealing in every way. Population: 21 in 58, 13 finer. CAC: 8 in 58, 3 finer (2/18).
Ex: Dallas Signature (Heritage, 2/2015), lot 3253.(Registry values: N1793)
