1851-O Double Eagle, MS61+
Attractive Early O-Mint Twenty

1851-O $20 MS61+ NGC. The fairly plentiful mintage of the second-year O-mint double eagle, the 1851-O, appears to have been largely subsumed in the bustling commerce of New Orleans, the largest city in the South at the time and among America's most important commercial ports. The typical 1851-O grades only Very Fine to Extremely Fine; Mint State examples such as the present MS61+ NGC example are quite rare. At first glance the greenish-gold surfaces seem to suggest a higher grade, and protected prooflike areas remain around the peripheries. The luster thins into faint field haze in the exposed fields, however, which along with a few scattered light marks accounts for the grade. Still a quite nice example of this early O-mint twenty.
