Description

1852 Double Eagle, MS62
Lovely, Conditionally Scarce Example

1852 $20 MS62 NGC. Garrett and Guth (2008) describe this issue as "one of the more common Type 1 double eagles." While true in absolute terms, this statement does not reflect the conditional scarcity of this early date in high grades. At NGC, for example, more than 1,500 examples of this date have been graded, but just 111 of those coins have been designated in Mint State. This is a lovely piece with impressively full strike definition and satiny surfaces that exhibit light antique-gold coloration with deeper peach peripheral accents. A few minor surface marks are consistent with the grade. Census: 26 in 62, 9 finer (3/14).
