Description

1852 Double Eagle, MS62
High-End Type One Example

1852 $20 MS62 NGC. The California Gold Rush had far-reaching social and economic consequences that lasted through the end of the 19th century and beyond. One consequence was the authorization of the double eagle, conceived as early as 1836 but first produced for mass circulation in 1850. Philadelphia twenty dollar output reached more than 2 million pieces in 1852, and examples are among the most accessible Type One coins in the series. Moreover, the 1852 was well-made, and many coins possess excellent eye appeal, as seen here.

Boldly delineated hair curls and star radials typify this magnificent Uncirculated twenty dollar gold piece. Frosty luster and light orange-gold color provide each side with splendid visual quality. Scattered marks are in accordance with the grade, and none are overly distracting. Census: 27 in 62, 9 finer (9/15).(Registry values: N4719)
