1852-O $20 AU58 NGC. The Liberty Head double eagle series was introduced in 1850, the year after the California Gold Rush got seriously under way, as an outlet for the massive gold stocks traveling eastward from the Fields of Gold. Since the San Francisco branch mint opened only four years later in 1854, the New Orleans Mint pieces from early in the series are justifiably high on collectors' want lists. They combine immense historicity with antebellum romance and charm--and considerable numismatic scarcity.
The 1852-O is among the more available early O-mint issues (while still quite scarce), and hence is a popular choice for collectors desiring a type coin, or for a high-grade representative in a date set. This example is quite close to Uncirculated, and as such is considerably finer than the average example, which is likely to grade VF-XF at best. (The average certified survivor grades a bit better than Choice XF.) The piece is sharply struck in the centers, but noticeably weak at the rims on both sides. Compensation arrives in the form of pristine, nearly mark-free surfaces, colored beautiful yellow-gold. A single nick on Liberty's cheek is not overly bothersome. NGC has certified 14 pieces finer (8/09).
