Description
1852-O Liberty Twenty, MS61
Semi-Reflective Fields, CAC
Finer Pieces Are Rare
1852-O $20 MS61 NGC. CAC. Winter 1-A. The Type One Liberty
double eagle was introduced in 1850 with production coming from
both the Philadelphia and New Orleans mints. Although Philadelphia
struck the majority of the pieces, the New Orleans Mint accounted
for significant numbers in the early issues. In 1852 the southern
mint struck 190,000 examples, making it the second most available
O-mint double eagle in terms of overall rarity. The issue is also
the second most common in grades AU53 and finer, in large part due
to extremely low mintages after 1853. This availability makes it a
popular choice for branch mint type collectors, but also renders it
one of the few New Orleans issues that are collectible in Mint
State. With the San Francisco Mint opening in 1854, the gold from
California previously shipped to New Orleans was instead diverted
to nearby San Francisco. The subsequent New Orleans mintages
dropped dramatically as a result, producing only a fraction of
their previous numbers.Bright green-gold surfaces on sharply detailed devices flash undertones of orange gold and accents of lilac on the high points of this CAC-endorsed double eagle. Semi-reflective fields yield flashy contrast and enhance the overall visual presentation, which is fantastic. Marks are as expected for a New Orleans MS61 example, although none are bothersome or individually significant. A loupe shows an interesting cross-like abrasion that serves as a pedigree marker just above the 85.
NGC reports only five numerically finer pieces (9/25). In Gold Coins of the New Orleans Mint 1839-1909, fifth edition, Doug Winter estimates between 15 and 20 Uncirculated examples survive, and also states: "The luster tends to be better than that found on the 1851-O, and this makes the 1852-O a good choice for a New Orleans Type One type coin." The present example certainly upholds that sentiment.(Registry values: N7079)
