Interesting 1853/2 Double Eagle, Choice AU

1853/2 $20 AU55 PCGS. FS-301. Numismatists have debated the nature of this issue for many years, and its status as an "overdate" has been quite controversial. Nonetheless, the bottom of the underdigit 2 is plain on this piece, and this rare variety is confirmed by the small die lump beneath the R in LIBERTY, which is present on all true 3/2 overdates. Pleasing yellow-gold patina endows the surfaces of this interesting specimen. The right stars have weak centrils, but the rest of the details are crisply defined. Captivating luster gives this piece great eye appeal. Population: 13 in 55, 17 finer (7/08).(Registry values: N2998)
