Description
Notable Near-Mint 1853/2 Twenty
1853/2 $20 AU58 PCGS. FS-301, formerly FS-008. As recounted by Garrett and Guth in their Encyclopedia of U.S. Gold Coins, "Lee Minshull reports that the true 1853, 3/2 variety can be positively identified by a small die bulge below the R of LIBERTY." On this piece, the bulge is not only present, but prominent, as is the feature within the lower loop of the 3. Both sides sport warm and inviting yellow-orange luster. Only a handful of stray, wispy abrasions are present, and just a touch of friction across the high points precludes a Mint State designation. Population: 12 in 58, 4 finer (8/09).(Registry values: N2998)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 268M, PCGS# 8909, GSID# 9846)
Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
Weight: 33.44 grams
AGW: 0.9675oz
