Description

Challenging 1853 Double Eagle, MS62

1853 $20 MS62 PCGS. The 1853 double eagle is easily available in Very Fine and Extremely Fine grades, and even About Uncirculated coins can be located with little trouble. Mint State coins are more challenging, and when located are apt to be in the lower levels thereof. Indeed, MS63 and finer specimens are quite rare and out of the reach of most collectors.
This peach-gold MS62 example displays nice luster and well struck design elements. LIBERTY is strong as are the obverse stars, most of Liberty's hair, and the eagle's feathers. A few minuscule marks prevent a finer grade, but all in all both surfaces and rims have been well cared for. Population: 22 in 62, 1 finer (11/10).(Registry values: N4719)
