Description
1853 Double Eagle, MS62
Rich Color
1853 $20 MS62 PCGS. Strikingly orange-gold, suggestive of a
copper-heavy alloy, though no obviously red areas are present.
Detail is pleasing on both the central devices and the stars around
Liberty's portrait, where the crossing lines are obvious. Despite
light to moderate abrasions, this piece has a pleasing appearance
for the grade. While the Philadelphia Mint made more than 1.26
million double eagles in 1853 thanks to the many shipments of gold
coming in from California, surprisingly few of those pieces have
survived in Select or better condition. PCGS has graded only two
coins as MS63 or finer (6/13).(Registry values: N4719)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 268M, PCGS# 8908, Greysheet# 9788)
Weight: 33.44 grams
Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
