Description

1853 Liberty Double Eagle, MS63
Registry-Grade Example

1853 $20 MS63 PCGS. Philadelphia Mint personnel coined 1.2 million double eagle in the series' fourth year of regular issue. However, only 30 to 40 pieces are believed to exist in Uncirculated condition, according to Doug Winter. Most were likely shipped overseas and melted, and a much smaller number would have circulated domestically. Incredibly, there are only 11 MS63 submissions at NGC and PCGS combined (two of those MS63+), and a single NGC-graded example is numerically finer (1/25).

This 1853 No Motto double eagle features warm golden-orange color and vibrant mint frost with strong definition throughout. Closer inspection reveals minor hairlines and ticks, including a few roller marks above and left of the T in TWENTY , but they are virtually inconsequential relative to the conditional rarity of this No Motto twenty. Population: 6 in 63 (1 in 63+), 0 finer (1/25).(Registry values: N7079)
