Description

1853-O Liberty Double Eagle, AU53
Last High-Mintage Issue

1853-O $20 AU53 PCGS. From 1850 to 1853, the New Orleans Mint produced an average of 179,250 double eagles each year, including 71,000 in 1853. The later years from 1854 to 1861 saw an average annual production of 14,023 double eagles at New Orleans. The difference, of course, was the opening of the San Francisco Mint in 1854, eliminating the need to ship California gold to Louisiana.
This lovely AU specimen has brilliant orange-yellow surfaces with reflective fields that show only a few handling marks on each side. Satin luster complements strong design elements. Population: 13 in 53, 38 finer (5/11).
