1853-O $20 AU55 NGC. In 1851, the New Orleans Mint struck well over 300,000 double eagles, but mintages swiftly dwindled, and by 1853, that Southern facility's production was down to the five figures. This luminous gold-orange example is modestly abraded overall with crisp striking detail. Considerable eye appeal despite a few digs around the face. Census: 44 in 55, 38 finer (8/09).
