Description
Condition Rarity 1853-O Double Eagle, AU58
1853-O $20 AU58 NGC. The 1853-O double eagle, coming from a mintage of 71,000 pieces, is relatively available in Very Fine and Extremely Fine grades. It becomes rare in the middle and upper reaches of About Uncirculated, and is very rare in Mint State (Douglas Winter, Gold Coins of the New Orleans Mint). This yellow-gold near-Mint example displays ample luster in the recessed areas. The design elements are well defined, except for the usual softness in the bun and the hair atop Liberty's head. Small marks are noted on the surfaces, especially the obverse, and on the rims of both sides. According to Winter, such marks are typical for the issue. Census: 34 in 58, 5 finer (5/08).(Registry values: N2998)
Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 268N, PCGS# 8910, Greysheet# 9847)
Weight: 33.44 grams
Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
