Description

1853-O Double Eagle, AU58
Vivid Color, Semiprooflike Luster

1853-O $20 AU58 NGC. Variety 1. The 1853-O Liberty double eagle claims a small mintage of 71,000 pieces, making the issue scarce in all grades and conditions. Most examples seen are in VF or XF grades, and Mint State coins are very rare. A few examples have surfaced in recent shipwreck finds, but high-grade specimens remain quite elusive.

The present coin is an attractive near-Mint piece, with just a trace of wear on the well-detailed design elements. The vivid greenish-gold surfaces retain much of their original mint luster, with a scattering of minor abrasions on both sides. Traces of prooflike reflectivity remain in sheltered areas. Census: 24 in 58, 4 finer (6/13).(Registry values: N2998)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 268N, PCGS# 8910, Greysheet# 9847)
