Description
1853-O Double Eagle, AU58
Conditionally Rare New Orleans Issue
1853-O $20 AU58 NGC. Variety 1. The 1853-O is significantly
scarcer than earlier double eagles from this mint. In 1853, gold
deposits at New Orleans continued from California ore, although
coinage of this denomination declined to only 71,000 pieces. The
1853-O circulated extensively and survives mainly in VF or XF
condition. High-end AU coins are rare, and only a handful of Mint
State pieces are extant. This near-Mint example displays bright
lemon-gold coloration and well-struck devices. Slight reflectivity
in the fields produces strong visual appeal. Light surface chatter
on each side is normal for the grade. Census: 25 in 58, 7 finer
(11/18).(Registry values: N2998)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 268N, PCGS# 8910, Greysheet# 9847)
Weight: 33.44 grams
Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
