Description

1853-O Twenty Dollar, AU58
Strong New Orleans Representative

1853-O $20 AU58 NGC. Variety 1. The 1853-O double eagle is more challenging overall than its three New Orleans predecessors. Only 71,000 pieces were struck, and Doug Winter estimates 400 to 500 coins survive. Only six to eight of those would qualify as technically finer than the near-Mint representative offered here, and the certified population data confirms that assessment. NGC reports seven finer submissions, and there are merely two higher grading events at PCGS (11/21). Those totals likely include some duplication. Each side is light orange-gold with luminous satin luster around the devices. Design definition is impressively strong. Myriad marks, as expected.(Registry values: N2998)
